I chose to use carriage bolts, washers, and locking nuts rather than rivets to secure the deck to the hull. I used screws alternating with carriage bolts. I did not feel that the structural rivets used on the original design were ideal. When I removed them, I could see that many of them were not even serving any purpose, because of deformations of the rivets during installation or simply weak riveting. There were enough rivets, and the fiberglass deck-to-hull strip - that it was still strong but I chose to use the bolts. This required some long hours of itchy work up under the stern and bow decks!
